Mama-time is a 12 week group that meets weekly, 10-12 moms and their babies and a trained facilitator.
There is often a lot of much needed attention given to pregnancy and
birth. And then you come home (or the midwives or doctor leave) and
then what?
I can remember early in my career as a counselor, I was at a large book
store researching current literature preparing for a presentation on
“Transition to Parenthood.” On one side of the isle were books all
about pregnancy and birth. I walked the whole isle until it ended. On
the opposing isle were books on parenting. There was nothing in the
middle; nothing about the transition. I couldn’t even find “Down Came
the Rain,” Brooke Shield’s experience with postpartum depression. Wow.
To me, that speaks volumes to how our society views the transition…it
doesn’t.
As a mother of two boys, I remember clearly how important that time was
to me in my development. I was motivated to be a good mother and I
needed help to achieve that goal. Fortunately, I found a great support
system of mothers willing to be real and vulnerable with each other and
I learned to be a “good enough” mother and found myself and joy in my
role as a mother.
I believe that every mother deserves to have the space to find her own
wisdom during this transition and that is why I’m so passionate about
Mamatime.
I’m so excited to announce that Mamatime has partnered with 4th
Trimester, a local nonprofit. This partnership will allow Mamatime to
do fund-raising and grant writing to expand its program as well as
offer financial aid for those who are unable to afford the program. We
are looking forward to an expansive 2010!
Mamatime (Mothers of Asheville Meeting All--together) is a safe,
non-judgmental space for new mothers to connect with others and develop
“parent wisdom,” the internal confidence that makes the parent the
“expert” about their own child and parenting experience.
Mamatime is a closed support group for mothers with infants 4 months of
age and under. Mamatime meets for 14 weeks and is lead by one of our three trained
facilitator (Shelley Tom, Holly Mason, Sarah Gralnick).
Fee: Sliding Scale $100-$150. Scholarships available! No one denied due to finances.
